Artificial intelligence is transforming cancer research and medical science at an unprecedented pace. From AI-powered pathology image analysis to predictive models identifying patients at elevated risk, the potential to save lives is extraordinary. But with transformative capability comes transformative risk — and the healthcare sector's experience with AI governance is still nascent.

Professor Kai London, CISO and AI Security Strategist, is at the forefront of developing practical AI security and governance frameworks for the life sciences and healthcare sectors. His work addresses a fundamental challenge: how do research organisations harness the power of AI while ensuring the security, integrity, and ethical handling of the sensitive data on which these models depend?

"The healthcare sector has spent decades building trust frameworks around human subjects research — ethics committees, informed consent, data anonymisation protocols," Professor London observes. "Now AI is challenging every assumption in those frameworks. When a model trained on patient data makes a diagnostic recommendation, who is accountable? When an adversary poisons the training data, what happens to the patients downstream? These are questions that require both technical and governance answers."

Professor London's AI Security framework for healthcare organisations addresses four domains. First, Data Integrity: ensuring training and validation data is protected from manipulation. Second, Model Security: protecting deployed AI models from extraction and adversarial attacks. Third, Operational Security: securing the infrastructure on which AI systems run. Fourth, Governance: establishing policies, oversight mechanisms, and accountability structures for responsible AI deployment.
